Ash Vale is a small place lying close to Aldershot. This has long been Army country and large areas of the regions open spaces are given over for use by the services as training grounds. Fortunately, neither this, nor the urban sprawl spreading out from Aldershot detracts from the beauty of the occasional small lakes you may come across, these being regularly used by fishermen as well as providing peaceful places for visitors.

The Basingstoke Canal adds to the interest of Ash Vale. It was constructed in 1778 when it was much used for ferrying goods during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the canal is a place for pleasure boats, with its tow paths providing a haven for the wildlife of the area.

Visitors wanting to know a little of the history of the region could do no better than to call in at the Ash Centre. Here a special history room is set aside, but access is by appointment only.

The area is largely residential with a few shops and a pub bearing the unusual name The Standard of England, but appropriate considering the vast tracts of land used by the Army.

Ash Vale is within easy reach of the North Downs Way and the Surrey town of Guildford.
